These duties require extensive training in firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency medical care. Firefighters must operate apparatus and perform dangerous assignments under emergency conditions. Any of these situations may require strenuous physical activity in extremely hostile environments such as toxic smoke and very high temperatures. Although fighting fires, performing rescue operations, and providing emergency medical are the primary duties, a significant portion of a firefighter’s time is spent conducting inspections, participating in training, and performing routine station duties.
