About the Greater Madawaska Fire Department

Updated: 2 years ago - Created: March 16th, 2011

The Township of Greater Madawaska Fire Department is a team of trained, caring volunteers committed to increasing safety and security, protecting and strengthening our Municipality through education, fire prevention, rescue and fire suppression.

The goal of the Fire Department is to provide fire protection services through a range of programs designed to protect lives and property of the ratepayers of the Municipality from the adverse effects of fires or exposure to dangerous conditions created by man or nature; first to their Municipality second to those Municipalities requiring assistance through approved emergency fire service plan and program (e.g. mutual aid) activities; and third to those Municipalities which are provided fire protection services by the fire department via approved agreements.

History

In the beginning, Our Most Precious Blood Catholic Church had a pump that was used to fill cisterns for local residents. In the event of a fire, the pump was used by whoever was available at the time to assist in the extinguishment of the fire. Eventually, the Township formed an actual Fire Department in the late 1950’s and purchased a 1946 GMC pumper from the Marathon Fire Department for about $5,000.Click here to learn more
